LGBTQ Inclusivity & Equality
RSJI: LGBTQIA+ INCLUSIVITY & EQUALITY
Let us create humans in our image. (Gen. 1:26)
Group Chair: Gail Podolsky Clergy Liaison: Rabbi Lydia Medwin
The Temple's RSJI LGBTQIA+ group works towards ensuring that Temple members and fellow Georgians of any sexual or gender identity obtain all of their civil and human rights. We are always seeking to connect with new members with new ideas. Please email us for more information and to join our group!
Our goals are:
- To educate our Temple community about the issues surrounding the protection of LGBTQIA+ rights and the obstacles that stand between them and their safety and protection.
- To advocate at the State Capital to protect these rights.
- To partner with organizations in our community to aid in their support and work together towards creating a better future for the LGBTQIA+ community and the people who love them.
How we accomplished these goals:
- We have created a strong LGBTQIA+ outreach culture, including the creation of a group that activates that responsibility through social networking and engagement in social justice programs with emphasis on 1). HIV/ AIDS Treatment and Prevention, 2) LGBTQIA+ Youth, and 3) Legislature and Awareness.
- We have partnered with Jerusalem House, a place of refuge for children and teenagers who are often fleeing violence or rejection. We have supported the organization by beautifying its landscaping and donating items that will help them begin a new chapter.
- We join the Jewish community each year as a part of the Atlanta Pride Parade. In the past, we’ve encouraged local and state political candidates to join us as a statement of their support of the LGBTQIA+ community, and around a dozen of these candidates join us each year.
- We have joined in pairs and gone with friends and family to get HIV testing, even if we knew we were negative. This helps raise awareness of this growing issue in the Atlanta community and encourages conversations about treatments and prevention.
